Dark Harmony: Chapter Fourteen
Lena waited agonizing minutes in the shadow of the house. She needed to find shelter, but how could she leave Richard and his family vulnerable to Darien? There was nothing the vampire could do to the family during the day, but what about during these last few minutes? She wasn’t even sure she could sense him anymore. Had he always been able to hide his presence, or had he only been blocked while she concentrated on the dreams?
In the end she had no choice. She clutched her kit-bag and satchel and ran, her eyes scanning the streets for any sign of Darien. This was cutting it too closely. She should have left the option open to use the industrial building instead of setting it up as a decoy.
There, an old house, not abandoned, but neglected. She concentrated on the emotional state of the people inside. An elderly person, female, slept deeply. This was chancy, but Lena dashed to the old garage in the backyard. The building’s shabby exterior, along with the state of the yard, indicated that there wouldn’t be any activity around the building during the day. It was either this or dig a hole in the dirt and bury herself alive.
She pried open the rusted door and squeezed inside past an aging lawnmower and various carpentry tools that had seen better days. At the very back of the building, a large lump lay against the length of the wall. Lena lifted the corner of a faded canvas tarp, and the lump revealed itself to be an overturned rowboat.
She lifted the edge of the boat. Its weight was reassuring. One human man alone couldn’t lift this beast. She dropped her bags and nudged them under the bow. Then she crawled under the edge and flipped the tarp back down before she lowered the boat completely. The space felt cramped and smelled of mice and dust. But there was no chance of sunlight seeping in, and not much of a chance that someone would arrive tomorrow to take the old beast out for a row. She shifted, her motions restricted, until she could grip her sword and her knives. Then, finally, she laid her head on her satchel and closed her eyes.
For long moments before the sun rose, her mind revolved around and around. Darien was in the city. He’d followed her across an ocean, leaving his territory behind. How the hell had he followed her so far? It had to be the bond. As she’d described to Richard, when a vampire fed deeply from someone, it marked them. Her link to Darien was deeper still. As his co-leader she’d fed from him many times, as he’d fed from her.
Beyond all that, Darien had claimed her in ways he’d insisted would make the perfect bond. A soft whimper escaped from Lena’s tightly pressed lips. She curled into a fetal position as memories pulled her back into Darien’s painful embrace. He’d kissed her deeply after he’d tied her legs to the steel bar, forcing her to spread open to his hungry gaze.
